On Friday 1 March, Frank Green gave a talk about the stone carvings (the capitals, corbel table, etc) in Romsey Abbey.
It was a fascinating evening with, firstly a slideshow of the capitals, corbels and other Romanesque carvings inside and on the outside of the church, followed by a stroll round with torches to take a closer look at the actual carving of the capitals.
On Saturday 8 September – a lovely sunny and warm day – we welcomed a large numbers of our visitors to our marquee at the show. It was a great success; we were able to recruit a number of new members and look forward to meeting them again at future events.
On Wednesday 3 October, we enjoyed a fascinating visit to Guildford Cathedral and the British Army’s world-famous officer training establishment.
We travelled by minibus, stopping for lunch at Guildford Cathedral’s refectory.
Given by Maurice and Molly Bennett on 25 September, this talk was open to all: £5 to members who book beforehand and £6 to everyone on the door. The price includes a glass of wine. It was a really fascinating and amusing talk; we learned a great deal about glass from real enthusiasts.
On Sunday 26 August at 4.30pm, by kind invitation of the Revd Tim and Mrs Caroline Sledge, Friends were invited to enjoy a Strawberry Tea in the Vicarage garden.
This was followed by the Friends’ Evensong in the Abbey at 6.30pm. The choir Cantatrice sang Evensong for us.
On Wednesday 6 June, we spent a full day visiting Fishbourne Roman Palace followed by a water tour of Chichester Harbour.
The weather was changeable weather – rather reminiscent of the Thames royal pageant – but we were part of a Jubilee Sail Past at Itchenor. It was a great day, both at Fishbourne Roman Palace and at Itchenor.
On Thursday 5 July, we organised a parish excursion to Shaftesbury.
Our visit took in the Abbey ruins, nunnery and Gold Hill, immortalised in Hovis TV adverts of old.
